Chelsea's New Signing Oriol Romeu
Chelsea have announced the signing of Barcelona youngster Oriol Romeu for £4.3m from the Catalan club. Joining on a four-year deal, the Spanish Champions have inserted a buy-back clause which can be inserted in the first two years. Pep Guardiola will be able to re-sign the 19 year-old within the first year for £8.7m, or during his second year at Stamford Bridge for £13m. The buy-back option is similar to that envoked in Bojan's move to Roma, an attempt to prevent another Cesc Fabregas situation developing.
Chelsea confirmed on their official website: "Chelsea Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of Oriol Romeu Vidal from Barcelona on a four-year-contract. "The 19-year-old will join us once his duties with Spain's U20 World Cup squad in Colombia are complete." Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas has been a long-time admirer of Romeu since his days at Porto when he tried to lure the Spanish youth international to Portugal and he assured the teenager he will have a role to play in the first team.
A tough tackling midfielder with an excellent engine room, Romeu is expected to challenge for a first-team spot with Michael Essien sidelined through injury.
