Under-20 South American Championships Star Players

1) Lucas Rodrigues (São Paulo)
While Neymar had a predictably good tournament it was perhaps São Paulo's Lucas who caught the eye the most. His finest game came in Brazil's 6-0 thrashing of Uruguay when his blistering pace and lethal finishing helped him to a hat trick on a very poor pitch, which confirmed Ney Franco's side as champions. The 18 year-old attacking midfielder is the latest in a long line of talent to come out of the Morumbi and has been described as the best talent to come out of the club since Kaka. Having made his breakthrough at the end of 2010, Lucas was still an unknown quantity when he arrived in Peru but he will not have disappointed scouts from Europe's elite with Chelsea, Manchester United, Barcelona and Real Madrid all taking interest. With creativity, an eye for goal and flair, Lucas has all the makings of a future star in the national team. Finishing the tournament with four goals to his name, São Paulo will be looking to resist any big money offers that may come their way.

2) Juan Manuel Iturbe (Cerro Porteno)
Hailed as the next Lionel Messi, Iturbe was the highlight for Walter Perazzo's Argentina at the tournament and starred for the Albiceleste as they narrowly beat rivals Brazil 2-1. The 17 year-old scored a memorable wonder goal to win the game as he skipped past three defenders before beating Gabriel to confirm his reputation as

one of South America's hottest properties. IBorn to Paraguayan parents, Itrube at already represented Paraguay at youth level but will have endeared himself to his new nation after a number of eye catching performances, including further goals against Uruguay and Chile. Currently playing for Paraguay outfit Cerro Porteno, Iturbe returned to star in the Copa Libertadores, helping inspire his side to a 5-2 win over Colo Colo, scoring two goals. Turning 18 years-old in June, Iturbe is believed to have signed a contract with Porto but a number of English and Spanish sides appear intent on hijacking the deal. A diminutive playmaker with a low centre of gravity, Iturbe is able to go past players with ease and his eye for goal has seen inevitable comparisons drawn with Messi.

3. Neymar (Santos)
Already one of the biggest prospects in world football, Neymar had a big reputation to live up to having already been capped at senior level by Brazil and subject to big money moves. With Brazil starting as pre-tournament favourites, Neymar quickly confirmed his potential in the tournament opener against Paraguay, scoring all four goals in his country's 4-2 victory against Paraguay. The Santos star put in an incredible performance to add to his growing reputation, and finished the tournament by breaking the record for the most goals scored at the tournament with nine. Barcelona head scout Ibert Valentin who went over to monitor the progress of Neymar and Lucas, will not have left disappointed by arguably one of the stars of the tournament. Leading the front line for Brazil, Neymar proved a constant threat, tormenting defenders with his pace, trickery and devastating finishing ability. It remains only a matter of time before he is plying his trade in Europe.

4. Edwin Cardona (Atlético Nacional)
The 18 year-old attacking midfielder has been one of Sudamericano's most instrumental players. Scoring four goals at the tournament, Cardona has excellent playmaking qualities and was the heartbeat of a poor Colombia side. With excellent vision, awareness and range of passing, Cardona's side will not feature in the Copa Libertadores but he is certainly a name to remember. Regarded as one of the country's rising stars, Cardona made a name for himself at international youth level during the 2009 South American Under-17 Championships in Chile, where he scored seven goals in seven games, including a hat-trick against Ecuador. The midfielder who has made 25 league appearances for Atlético Nacional in the past two seasons is a set-piece expert and at the tournament took charge of Colombia's penalties and free-kicks. Cardona looks set to be a future star for the national team and he may earn himself a move to Europe if he continues his development and fulfils his potential.

5. Bryan Carrasco (Audax Italiano)
Dubbed the Chilean Maicon, Carrasco shone for Chile at Sudamericano and so much so that Real Madrid and Barcelona are believed to be eying up the Chile starlet, who is able to operate at full-back or on the wing. After impressing scouts, the youngster is expected to be invited to Spain for trials. A relative unknown quantity before the tournament, his name will be on the lips of many fans and scouts after his electrifying performances down the right flanks. Scoring three goals in the tournament and setting up a number for his teammates, Carrasco may be the subject of a move with Audax suffering heavy losses in the transfer market. A future star of the national team, Carrasco has a bright future in the game and has all the attributes to succeed at the very highest level.
