When Liverpool signed Jamaican born Sterling in February 2010, the Merseyside club beat a host of teams to his signature including Arsenal, Manchester City, Tottenham and Manchester United. Regarded as the next big thing in English football he is one of the hottest properties in the country after impressing for both club and country. Such is the potential many believe he can go on to be as big as Wayne Rooney, Theo Walcott and Jack Rodwell. His move signalled a change in direction at Liverpool, whose youth system was almost non existent under the helm of Gerard Houllier. The capture of Sterling from QPR for an initial fee of £600,000 shows Liverpool are once again ready to compete for the best young English kids in the game.
The talented winger arrived in Kirby with a reputation for his pace, trickery and flair. On his Liverpool debut in an Under 18s match over neighbours Everton, Sterling was the star of the show and made a scoring start as they came from two goals behind to win 4-3 to confirm his rising reputation in the game. Since then he has continued to make an impression under the watchful eye of Rodolfo Borell and at the age of 15, was rewarded with a substitute's appearances in the first teams pre-season defeat at Borussia Moenchengladback. An established England youth international, Sterling has been earmarked by boss Kenny Dalglish as a first team star of the future. On February 14 2011, Sterling orchestrated the Valentine's massacre as he helped Liverpool
Academy Prospect Raheem Sterling
romp to a 9-0 victory over Southend in the FA Youth Cup as they progressed to the quarter-final. Sterling scored five goals, including a hat-trick after just 35 minutes and with the winger already training with the first team it will only be a matter of time before he features in Kenny Dalglish's plans.
Also on the scoresheet in Liverpool's 9-0 win over Southend was midfielder Conor Coady, who is already a favourite of Kenny Dalgish, having coached the club's academy last year. The captain of the England Under-17 team that won the European Championships last May, he has since played for the Under-18s against Poland. A natural born leader, Coady has been at the club since the age of eight and is equally comfortable at the heart of the defence. Considered a future star of England and Liverpool, Coady has all the qualities to become the next Steven Gerrard with whom he has already been compared to. A box-to-box midfield with limitless energy, drive and a good range of passing, Coady offers hope for a bright future at Anfield along with the likes of Raheem Sterling, Toni Silva, Jonjo Shelvey and Jesus Fernandez Suso who will all be looking to make their first team breakthrough in the next few years.
