River Plate Sensation Rogelio Gabriel Funes Mori

With the new Apertura season just three games in, River Plate striking sensation Rogelio Gabriel Funes Mori is currently causing headwaves and has been increasingly linked to some of Europe's top clubs. Scoring in this season's opener against Tigre, Funes Mori added a further two goals in the El Clasico against Independiente to continue their 100% winning start to the season. Described as the next Hernan Crespo by club captain Matias Almeyda, Funes Mori is the latest wonderkid to emerge at River Plate. He can play as a centre forward, and is equally as good on the left wing. Currently playing for Argentina U18s, he is a target man who possesses good ariel ability and has great finishing skills and excellent technique. In a Clausura match in May 2010, Funes Mori scored an outrageous first half-trick in their 3-0 win over Racing Club to confirm his talent and rising reputation in the game. There are great expectations for Funes and while he will be focusing on establishing his credentials in Argentina, his eye catching displays have already attracted the interest of Manchester United, Fiorentina and Juventus.

Born in Mendoza, Argentina, he emigrated with his family to Arlington, Texas in 2001. He went to Workman Junior High and Arlington High School, playing soccer with his brother Jose Ramiro Funes Mori. Funes Mori scored 40 goals in the 2008 season leading his team to District Champions and area finalist. Gabriel and

Ramiro, who are mirror image identical twins, also played several seasons for the Associated Soccer Group (ASG) Central Gold 91 team. The club played in the Dallas Cup Tournament in 2008. It was here where they were spotted by Chelsea scout Jorge Alvial, who invited the brothers for a trial at Chelsea, but the pair signed for Argentine giants River Plate.

Having started out in the reserves, Funes Mori scored four goals in his first season and made his debut in the Primera División on 6 December 2009 against Club Atlético Vélez Sársfield in a 3-1 defeat. Coming on as a 66th-minute substitute, Funes Mori impressed on his debut despite the defeat, even getting the chance to nutmeg Velez' Fabian Cubero, much to the delight of the River faithful. Inevitable comparisons have already been made with the late, great Juan Gilberto Funes, and not just because the pair share the same name. Rogelio Funes Mori is following in the same footsteps of the River Plate legend that was instrumental to the club winning the Copa Libertadores in 1986, by holding the same position and jersey that his namesake once did. As a forward, Funes Mori provides something to the River attack that they didn't possess before they gave the youngster a chance, the ability to head the ball. Arguably one of his biggest strengths, his height and potential to dominate the aerial side to the game gives the side a different option to their attacks. Funes Mori is likely to see more first team opportunities this season as River continue with their policy of blooding their most promising youths, though it is unlikely he will be paired with Daniel Villalva who is also an exciting prodigy on River's books. When paired together to lead the frontline, the youngsters inexperience has at times shown and have been out muscled during the games. Funes Mori looks to have a bright future and has all the attributes to succeed at the top. Whether the starlet will remain in Buenos Aires long enough to become a Los Millionaires legend appears unlikely with so many European suitors vying for his signature, but Funes Mori is the next wonderkid to come off the River production line.
